The Vanguards will be hard-pressed to repeat the success of last season, when they won their first eight games. But the core of a good team is still there. The offensive line returns three starters and there is a talented group of receivers. But a lot depends on the backfield, which has only one part-time starter returning. Wilson, who shared the tailback position last season, will be asked to carry the ball 15-20 times per game this year. “He’s going to be the guy,” Backstrom said. “He’s going to have to hold up with everyone after him.” Mitchell and Shine are battling for the quarterback spot. Shine might also play tight end. Holmes, who has 4.6 speed, might be the best all-around player in the league. He will play linebacker, tight end, H-back and maybe some tailback. “All I know for sure is he won’t be off the field,” Backstrom said.
