Two bomb attacks heightened tensions in Lebanon on the eve of the nation’s first parliamentary elections in 20 years. The balloting has split the Mediterranean country along the same sectarian lines that triggered the 1975-90 civil war, and Maronite Catholics said they would boycott the vote. Maronite leaders met with government officials to negotiate a postponement. But the talks failed, and the Syrian-backed government of President Elias Hrawi said the elections would be held as planned.
