South Pasadena : 54% Water Rate Hike Gains
- Share via
A proposed 54% hike in water rates will be considered by the City Council at its Sept. 2 meeting.
The recommendation was approved in a 3-2 vote, with Councilmen James S. Woollacott and Paul Zee dissenting. They said the proposed increase, which would boost the average household’s monthly bill about $7.70, is unnecessarily steep.
Public Works Director James R. Van Winkle told the council that the hefty increase is essential to offset declining revenues and increasing operating costs and to replace aging equipment. He said the city is absorbing losses of about $500,000 per year under its current water rate schedule.
