CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : HUNTINGTON BEACH : Man Slays Infant Son, Then Kills Himself

An armed man who broke into his estranged girlfriend’s bedroom early Friday shot and wounded the teen-age woman and killed their infant son before killing himself, police said. “It appears that he’s been upset over a breakup that occurred earlier this year,” said Police Lt. Ed McErlain. The shooting was reported shortly after 1 a.m. John Craig Carlson, 31, of Redondo Beach apparently entered the apartment through a second-floor window and was confronted by Michelle Smith, 19, who was shot in the leg with a bullet from a 9-millimeter handgun, investigators said. As the young mother placed a 911 call, Carlson shot 3-month-old Asa William Smith in the chest, then turned the weapon on himself, McErlain said.
