Lenny Wilkens, U.S. Olympic assistant coach, ruptured an Achilles’ tendon in a basketball game between the U.S. basketball staff and a team from the Barcelona Police Dept.
Wilkens will be on crutches for the last two games of the Olympic tournament and will have surgery when he returns home. He was hurt in the first minute of play, but the game continued and the U.S. team won, 49-47, in overtime. Referees for the game were Charles Barkley and Clyde Drexler, who volunteered their services.
This a daily roundup of Olympic-related items from reporters in Barcelona from the Los Angeles Times, Newsday and Baltimore Sun, all Times-Mirror newspapers.
