Arletty; French Film Actress, Published Autobiography

Arletty, 94, dark-haired factory worker who became a legendary actress in French films. Born in a Paris suburb, Leonie Bethiat worked in an armaments factory to help support her family. She was “discovered” by artists when she frequented their favorite cafes, and began her career under the name Arletty as a model and chorus girl. She got her start in movies about the same time sound came into use, and her first major role was in “Hotel du Nord” in 1938. A favorite of French directors, including Carne and Jacques Prevert, she starred in the classic “Les Enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise).” Her autobiography, “Je Suis Comme Je Suis (I Am as I Am),” was published five years ago. On Friday in Paris.
