Allan Houser, a sculptor who has six works in bronze or stone at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, will receive the 1992 National Medal of Arts today in Washington, D.C. A 78-year-old Apache from Oklahoma, Houser will be the first American Indian artist to receive the medal, which was instituted by Congress in 1984 and is bestowed by the President in recognition of “outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support and availability of the arts in the United States.”
