The Region : Water Legislation Backed
Two powerful boards gave votes of support on Tuesday for federal legislation designed to help speed the cleanup of the severe ground water contamination in the San Gabriel Valley.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the board of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California unanimously endorsed the bill sponsored by Rep. Esteban E. Torres (D-Pico Rivera).
The bill, introduced last year, calls on voluntary cooperation from business and industry, which would pay most of the cleanup project.
It is the first time federal legislation has been proposed to remedy the pollution that fouls portions of the underground water supply.
