Taper Event Raises $100,000

Center Theatre Group Volunteers’ Angel’s Night ’92 gala honoring lyricist Hal David Feb. 9 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire netted more than $100,000. Proceeds will support the Mark Taper Forum’s Improvisational Theatre Project, a multiethnic professional company that performs for young audiences throughout Southern California. Katherine Todd is president. Rosemary Kramer chaired the event.
Long Beach Youth Home will receive $18,000, net proceeds of the Long Beach Youth Home Boosters’ “Romantic Interlude” gala held Feb. 13 aboard the Queen Mary. The money will go to residential treatment programs for abused and neglected boys at the home.
Southwest Museum’s new cookbook, “Southwest Cooks!” has raised $15,000 to date for the museum. The book, compiled by a volunteer committee, celebrates five native cuisines of North America and sells for $14.95, plus tax and shipping. The Almansor Center has received $26,500, funds raised at a dinner Oct. 6 at El Molino Viejo in San Marino. Funds will benefit programs at Almansor, a South Pasadena school for students at risk of learning, behavior and emotional problems. Since its founding eight years ago, the auxiliary has raised more than $131,000 for the center.
Motion Picture and Television Fund has received a $100,000 check, net proceeds raised Oct. 16 at Regent Beverly Wilshire. Proceeds are from the auxiliary’s Cinema Glamour Shop and fund-raising events during the last year. Buddy Rogers presented Douglas Fairbanks Jr. with the Mary Pickford Award. The shop, at 343 N. La Brea, was founded in 1930 by Pickford and carries vintage and current designer clothing and accessories sold at bargain prices.
Ian S. Brown Foundation for Congenital Defects raised more than $26,000 for medical treatment to impoverished children with birth defects. The funds were raised at a Nov. 9 benefit at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Songwriter Carol Connors was chairman. The event was coordinated by Carrie Winston and Susan Shaw.
Plaza Community Center’s Latino Child Abuse and Neglect Treatment and Prevention Program received a $7,500 grant from In-N-Out Burger. The grant will help continue bilingual and bicultural counseling services for youth and families at risk in East Los Angeles.
