JERUSALEM — Former Prime Minister Menachem Begin regained consciousness Wednesday but was in critical condition and remained on a respirator after suffering a heart attack a day earlier.
Doctors said that Begin, 78, might be out of intensive care at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital this week.
Hospital director Dan Michaeli said there is no sign of brain damage or paralysis. First reports had said Begin suffered a stroke.
Health Ministry spokesman Hagai Elias said that Begin “is now conscious but still on a respirator.”
“His condition has improved. He is conscious and we hope he will soon leave intensive care,” Elias said.
The former Likud prime minister has suffered several heart attacks dating back to the 1960s.
