A 30-year-old man died early Wednesday while in police custody, and police suspect he was having a violent reaction to an unknown drug.
Leroy Cleghorn Jr. died at 12:45 a.m. at Paradise Valley Hospital, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
An officer was called to the 300 block of Rosebud Lane in Paradise Hills about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after residents reported a man calling for help, Robinson said.
The officer, whose name had not been released late Wednesday, found firefighters and paramedics trying to control Cleghorn, who was violent, Robinson said. The officer then assisted in loading Cleghorn onto a gurney and into an ambulance, Robinson said.
No restraints or holds were used on Cleghorn, officials said.
While en route to the hospital, Cleghorn stopped breathing and CPR was begun, but he died about two hours later, Robinson said. An autopsy is scheduled.
