Students to Compete for Arts Scholarships

Gregory Jefferson, 15, of Pasadena, a student at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and Amy Janel Carter, 17, who attends La Canada High School, are among 12 students who will compete for scholarships at The Music Center Spotlight Awards.

Gregory will compete in classical instrumental music, Amy in ballet.

Finalists were selected from 400 high school students who applied.

Other categories are modern dance, opera, pop/musical theater vocal and jazz instrumental music.

The performances will be at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Winners in each category will receive $5,000 scholarships and runners-up $2,500.

The event is sponsored by Pacific Telesis Foundation and scholarship funds provided by the Johnny Carson Foundation, Dr. and Mrs. Peter S. Bing and the National Arts Assn.
