Pomona : Vendor Licenses Discussed
The City Council has directed the city staff to draft an ordinance that will allow street vendors to sell items from pushcarts if they obtain licenses and obey restrictions.
The city bans pushcarts, but the prohibition is not enforced.
The council last June discussed a proposal to begin enforcing the ban by confiscating pushcarts, but it was set aside for further consideration after some council members argued that it was unfair to deprive street vendors of the right to earn a living.
This week, the council majority directed the staff to draft an ordinance legalizing pushcarts, but with restrictions on their numbers.
Mayor Donna Smith and Councilman Boyd Bredenkamp dissented, arguing that pushcarts should be outlawed entirely as a nuisance.
