Girardelli Wins Race; Kitt 45th

Four-time World Cup ski champion Marc Girardelli won Sunday’s super-G race at Val D’Isere, France.

Girardelli, an Austrian who competes for Luxembourg, skied down a 8,087-foot course in 1 minute 26.31 seconds, edging Norway’s Atle Skaardal by two-tenths of a second for his 36th career victory.

American A.J. Kitt, winner of Saturday’s downhill--becoming the first American winner since 1984 on the World Cup circuit-- was 45th in 1:29.61.

Urs Kaelin of Switzerland finished third in 1:26.89. His countryman, Paul Accola, was fourth in 1:26.92 and moved into the overall lead of the World Cup standings with 415 points. Alberto Tomba of Italy, who took the weekend off, remained second with 360 points.

“I made a big mistake today and that was enough,” Kitt said. “In the super-G if you make one mistake, that’s pretty much the race.”
