World IN BRIEF : EL SALVADOR : Delicate Peace Holds Despite Army Moves

A precarious peace held steady in El Salvador for the second day after leftist rebels declared a unilateral truce. But the peace teetered on a knife’s edge as the armed forces continued operations in rebel-held territory and guerrilla commanders threatened to fight back if provoked. The army said it had received no reports of combat since the rebel cease-fire took effect at midnight Friday. The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) announced the truce last week at peace talks in Mexico City.
