Fog Forces Suspension of Search in Ship Lanes

Dense fog forced the U.S. Coast Guard to suspend its search Thursday of the shipping lanes between San Pedro and Santa Catalina Island where debris from what is believed to be a power boat was found on Wednesday.
Searchers have recovered large pieces of white-painted floating wood, a couch, a bright-orange boat fender and a 14-by-20-foot cabin top that appears to be the wreckage of a power boat, officials said.
An 82-foot cutter was sent out Thursday to comb the 48-square-mile area north of Avalon, but no new evidence was found. There have been no reports of missing boats or people, officials said.
“Our search has been suspended pending further developments,” said Petty Officer Michael Dooley.
