SANTA ANA — An 18-year-old man who was making a security check on a friend’s apartment was fatally shot Friday night after he was approached by two men demanding money.
Jose Luis Madrigal of Santa Ana was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana shortly after the 11:57 p.m. incident. Police said the shooting took place outside an apartment complex at 825 E. Chestnut Ave.
Santa Ana Police Cpl. Steve Hawkins said Madrigal and a friend were leaving the complex when they were approached by two men, one of whom was armed with a .22-caliber handgun.
The attackers, described as two Latinos each in their 20s and weighing about 145 pounds, demanded money. Police said that Madrigal and his friend then struck the assailants, instigating a wild fistfight, Hawkins said.
During the struggle, Madrigal was shot once in the chest before the attackers fled on foot. Madrigal’s friend, who was not identified by police, was uninjured.
