La Canada Flintridge : Trial Set in Beating Case

A La Canada Flintridge man has been ordered to stand trial on charges that he beat his teen-age daughter with a wooden dowel because her school grades had dropped just below a straight-A average.
After a preliminary hearing, Glendale Municipal Judge Barbara Lee Burke on Tuesday told William Hwang, 44, to appear for a Nov. 6 arraignment in Pasadena Superior Court on a charge of felony child abuse. He remains free on $200,000 bail.
Investigators said Hwang used a dowel May 13 to severely beat his 17-year-old daughter because her report card had a 3.8 grade-point average, instead of the 4.0, or straight-A average he demanded.
Authorities said he was also angry because the girl had been absent from some classes without his authorization.
Hwang was arrested after a friend of the girl saw the injuries and contacted a child abuse hot line, authorities said.
