The bicycle built for two just got more romantic.
Designers of the new Buddy Bike have come up with an obvious variation on the traditional tandem: Riders pump side by side, eliminating back-seat drivers, conversations lost to the wind and scenery obstructions. Each rider powers the vehicle with his own set of pedals and has his own set of handlebars. The cyclist on the left is in charge of steering, braking and shifting gears.
“Lots of couples rent the bike to go bar- or restaurant-hopping up and down the strand,” says Chris Anderson, owner of Wild Wild Wheels in Hermosa Beach, adding that one popular trip takes cyclists to Santa Monica and back along the oceanfront bike path. WWW rents ($8 an hour) and sells ($499) the six-speed bike; it comes in canary yellow, metallic blue or basic black and white.
