Unexplained Fire Hits Vocational School
An unexplained fire at a West Covina vocational school early Thursday partially destroyed a building used for classrooms and damaged medical and office equipment, a school administrator said. The school, Northwest College, offers training in health-related fields.
Firefighters responded to the blaze in the 2100 block of West Garvey Avenue at about 1 a.m. after receiving a phone call from a man who lives in a house behind the building.
The fire was contained within 30 minutes, but smaller blazes subsequently erupted because of the densely packed insulation in the attic. The building was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported. Arson investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire and there was no immediate estimate of damage, West Covina Fire officials said.
The director of the school said damage exceeded $300,000.
