We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the excellent and generous article concerning the events related to the death of our son Jack in Guatemala in 1981 (“The Disappearance of Jack Shelton,” by Kevin McKiernan, Sept. 8).
Only through the journalistic and investigative professionalism, persistence and personal interest of the author, Kevin McKiernan, was the truth finally uncovered in 1989, and we are eternally grateful to him.
Although Jack was killed in cold blood by a uniformed Guatemalan, and we received a number of leads that proved to be hoaxes, we hold no animosity toward the Guatemalan people. On the contrary, we encountered many who were extremely helpful, courteous and sympathetic.
