Jason Kidd, considered one of the nation’s top high school basketball players, made an unwritten commitment to attend California next fall.
Kidd, a 6-foot-4 point guard who is a senior at St. Joseph’s Notre Dame High in Alameda, decided that staying close to home was more important than choosing from among the five schools he said he had been considering.
As recently as last month, Kidd had reduced his list to Kentucky, Arizona, Arizona State, Ohio State and Kansas. Last week, however, Kidd said he would choose between Cal and Kansas.
Kidd cannot formally commit to Cal until the national signing week in November.
