Purchase of the first of several lots to be acquired for expansion of the Municipal Transit Center was approved Tuesday by the City Council.
The city has agreed to pay $487,500 in Proposition A transit funds for a 6,500-square-foot lot at 1627 Gardena Ave., owned by a family trust.
The property is near the historic Southern Pacific Depot, which the city bought in late 1989 for conversion into a transit center. The city is negotiating to purchase several other lots adjoining the Gardena Avenue property, which will be used to build a multistory parking garage to serve the transit center.
