An unidentified man was hit and killed by an Amtrak passenger train late Saturday when he attempted to cross the tracks near the Del Mar Fairgrounds, authorities said.
The incident occurred just west of the 2100 block of Jimmy Durante Boulevard shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, said a spokeswoman for the San Diego County medical examiner’s office.
Amtrak engineer Arthur Gideon told investigators said he saw a Latino male, thought to be in his 50s, lying on the tracks and tried to stop the train.
Gideon said the man looked up and appeared to be getting off the tracks when the train hit him. The man died at the scene.
