Spill Spreads Cheese and Lard on Foothill Freeway

A load of nacho cheese and lard smeared the Foothill Freeway in San Dimas Monday, creating a new category of road hazard for early morning travelers.
“We’re waiting for the chips,” joked Pilar Chavez, a dispatcher for the California Highway Patrol. One lane of the freeway was closed about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles after a number of cans of cheese and lard spilled onto the freeway and broke open about 1 a.m., Chavez said.
The closed lane was described as a transition lane of the Foothill Freeway near its junction with the Orange Freeway near Pomona. The lane was reopened about 3 a.m. Chavez said it was unclear just how the cans spilled or what type of vehicle was carrying them.
No accidents were reported as a result of the spill.
