The Angels recalled right-hander Mike Fetters from triple-A Edmonton to alleviate a shortage in the bullpen caused when Joe Grahe was moved into the starting rotation.
Fetters will take the roster spot occupied by Fernando Valenzuela, who was put on the 15-day disabled list because of possible cardiac vessel abnormalities.
Fetters’ arrival will restore the pitching staff to 11. He was 2-7 for Edmonton with a 4.87 ERA in 11 starts.
Luis Polonia, booed last Monday at Anaheim Stadium after misplaying two fly balls into triples, has lifted his ban on signing autographs. However, there’s a catch. “On the road, I’ll sign. Not at home,” Polonia said. “They were bad to me, so why should I be good to them?”
Chuck Finley’s loss Saturday was his first on the road after five victories. All three of his losses have been to Eastern Division opponents--Boston, Toronto and Cleveland. Opponents are hitting .237 against Finley, up from .223 before Saturday’s game. . . . The Angels are without a home run in five games, their longest streak of the season. . . . Bob McClure’s ERA has soared from 6.23 to 9.31 in his last three outings, and Jeff Robinson’s has gone from 1.75 to 4.24 since May 31. . . . Catcher Lance Parrish, who turned 35 Saturday, missed his fifth game in a row from a strained tendon in his right forearm. He expects to miss “a few more days.” . . . Red Sox third baseman Wade Boggs was held out of the game because of a sore wrist. He is expected back today.
