Almighty Dollar Stifles Leadership

Daniel Akst’s column, “Getting a Handle on Long-Range Solutions” (May 14) properly decries the diminishing quality of life in the state and, by extension, the nation as a whole.
Akst suggests that the real problem is not lack of money, but a lack of collective will and leadership. I would agree.
I certainly recognize the importance money plays in the equation of business. But today, much of the business of business is influence.
Every legislative body in the country has been bought to some degree, for seldom does one read or hear about tough decisions made for the public good at the expense of popularity or influence.
The will to govern openly and honestly lies buried beneath the dollar; remove the buck and true leadership will flourish.
