Bill Lysle, an assistant defensive coach the past three seasons at Santa Monica College, has been named football coach at Mira Costa High, Athletic Director Rich Egan said Wednesday.
It is the first head coaching job for Lysle, who has been an assistant at several schools. He coached at now-defunct Aviation High in 1978-81, at Mira Costa in 1982-84 and again in 1987, at West Los Angeles College in 1985 and at Santa Monica College in 1986 before returning to the school in 1988.
Lysle replaces Larry Petrill, who resigned after last season to take a job as an assistant at San Jose State. Petrill guided Mira Costa to a 12-10-1 record and two Southern Section playoff berths in two seasons.
Egan said Lysle, a Manhattan Beach resident, is well-known in the community and has been a strong supporter of the Mira Costa football program. A real estate developer, Lysle is retired from the Sheriff’s Department and will serve as a walk-on coach.
“I believe he’s ready to be a head coach,” Egan said. “He’s got enough experience and he’s got the time.”
At his most recent coaching job, Lysle was in charge of linebackers and special teams on the staff of Santa Monica College Coach Ralph Vidal.
