The Andromeda Strain (A&E; today at noon): Robert Wise’s harrowing and terrifically engrossing 1971 film of the Michael Crichton novel, in which scientists desperately attempt to isolate a deadly strain of virus. A superbly designed film, it has stupendous special effects by Douglas Trumbull and a performance by Kate Reid as a crusty veteran researcher that all but steals the show.

Dancing Lady (Showtime Monday at 6 a.m.): A sleek 1933 MGM backstage romance teaming Clark Gable and Joan Crawford, who dances with Fred Astaire in his film debut.

Midnight (TMC Monday at 6:30 a.m.): This 1939 Mitchell Leisen film was one of his best, featuring a sophisticated, witty script by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett and starring an enchanting Claudette Colbert as a chorine from the Bronx who arrives in Paris with only the striking gold lame gown on her back and 25 centimes in its matching purse.
