BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Ryan Scratched From Weekend Work

Nolan Ryan threw for 20 minutes Friday, but he and Texas Manager Bobby Valentine decided the right-hander won’t pitch this weekend.
Ryan, 3-3, left Monday’s game after 4 1/3 innings because of a shoulder muscle strain. He said he will throw on the side Sunday, but Scott Chiamparino (1-0) will start in Ryan’s place against Boston.
A thorough examination of catcher Sandy Alomar’s right shoulder revealed no tear in the rotator cuff, so an exercise program has been prescribed to strengthen the shoulder, the Cleveland Indians said.
Alomar was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of pain in the shoulder. He said he had concealed the problem since spring training because he wanted to continue playing.
