In a rare racing occurrence, Michael Waltrip and Sterling Marlin tied for the pole in the Winston Open at Charlotte Motor Speedway, both being timed with laps of 31.499 seconds or 171.434 m.p.h. Under NASCAR rules, the No. 1 starting spot for the event goes to Waltrip on the basis of points standings.
