Vice President Quayle’s Qualifications
I read “Quayle: He Tries Harder” (Column One, May 9) with dismay.
The writer really portrays Quayle as an efficient vice president who tries harder, who has visited 46 states and 39 countries, raised $17 million for Republican candidates, etc. But this only means that he is a good politician and not the man who has the necessary qualifications to be the leader of the Western world.
The American people sense this, and there is a profound reason for this. Quayle’s frequent malapropisms, his frequent examples of bad taste, etc. give a very good portrait of the man.
An admirer of Quayle may say that these are little things, but little things are quite indicative of a man’s personality.
