SAN CLEMENTE — Members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad Thursday combed through pieces of a light pole and brick wall that were damaged by a homemade pipe bomb that blew up Wednesday night in a church parking lot.
No one was injured in the 10 p.m. blast that hurled shrapnel and glass as far as 250 feet away and blew out the windows of a van parked in the San Clemente Presbyterian Church lot at 119 N. Avenida De La Estrella.
San Clemente Police Lt. Paul Falk said the blast, which was heard half a mile away, could have been deadly.
A spokesman for the San Clemente Fire Department said he was working on “several leads” but none had anything to do with the church.
