NEWPORT BEACH : Architect Picked for Island’s Fire Station

The City Council will pay a Costa Mesa architectural firm $60,000 to design the new Balboa Island Fire Station.

James Karl Robinson AIA Inc., which also designed the Newport Center police station, will design the $1-million station at Marine and Park avenues.

The station will be built on two vacant lots that were previously occupied by a service station. The two-story, 6,100-square-foot station will house a kitchen, sleeping quarters and a living room area.

The council is expected to consider preliminary design plans by August, with construction set to begin by January and occupancy slated for December, 1992.

The station will replace an older structure about two blocks away. City Manager Robert L. Wynn said the old station, which is not earthquake proof, will be torn down and the site sold to help pay for the new station.

He said previous plans to use the 4,500-square-foot site of the old station as a mini-park were rejected by the local homeowners and merchants associations last year.
