A 20-year-old Marine was killed Sunday when the car he was riding in careened out of control and struck a tree in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, the coroner’s office reported.
The Marine Corps declined to release the man’s identity pending the notification of relatives.
The Marine was riding in the passenger seat of a car, which went out of control on California 79 at 10:55 a.m., hitting a tree just south of Lake Cuyamaca at the Paso Picho campground.
The accident occurred when the driver apparently over-corrected as he attempted to bring the car back to the road, authorities said. The Marine died at the scene of head injuries.
The driver and another passenger were flown to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego by a Life Flight helicopter.
