GOLF ROUNDUP : Crosby Overcomes Wind to Lead at Chesapeake

Elaine Crosby showed some respect for the wind Saturday, and her reward was the third-round lead at a $400,000 LPGA tournament at Chesapeake, Va.

“The way the wind kept shifting, I just tried to go out and make pars and not get too aggressive,” Crosby said after a one-under-par 71 was good enough for a one-stroke lead.

Crosby was at seven-under 209 after most of the front-runners wilted in the wind. Tammie Green, who was one shot ahead of Crosby after two rounds, birdied two of her last three holes to salvage a one-over 73 and was at 210.

While there was wind in Chesapeake, there was rain at Marietta, Ga., as a thunderstorm forced suspension of the third round of the Atlanta Classic.

Play was called off just after Mike Springer made a birdie putt on the second hole. Tom Kite, who had moved into a tie with Springer with a birdie on the first hole, still faced a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 2.

Lee Trevino had a bogey on the final hole to finish with an even-par 72, but still held on to a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Reunion Pro-Am Seniors tournament at Frisco, Tex.

Gene Littler had birdies on five of his first seven holes on the way to a course-record 65 and was in a group of five one shot back of Trevino. John Brodie, also in that group, had a 70 despite a bogey on the final hole.

Spain’s Seve Ballesteros bounced back with a five-under-par 67 to regain the lead in the Spanish Open at Madrid. Ballesteros, who was at 200 after 54 holes, holds a three-stroke lead after three rounds. Second-round leader Eduardo Romero of Argentina slipped to a 72 and fell to second.
