Should Taxpayers Say Yes or No to Measure J and Gypsum Canyon Jail?
When the half-cent sales tax was first proposed several months ago, all the hype was about building a new jail to prevent overcrowding. Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder only a few days ago continued the same theme. Even the arguments in favor of Measure J speak only about jails.
My sample ballot, however, not only includes the construction, etc., of a new jail but courthouse facilities. Did I miss some report somewhere on construction, furnishing, acquiring, maintaining and operating courthouse facilities with this half-cent sales tax?
As the rebuttal to Measure J states in the pamphlet: “Taxpayers should demand a more detailed, cost-effective plan before entrusting more of our tax money to county officials.”
