Backed by just a rhythm section, Marsalis tackles material by Gershwin, Kern, Porter and himself in a pop-oriented program that could easily have lapsed into jazz Muzak. But the general level of creativity stays well above that danger line. On “Yesterdays” and “I’ll Remember April,” Marsalis achieves a rare peak of emotional expression.
