Clayton, Sharts on List for Award

Craig Clayton and Scott Sharts of Cal State Northridge are among Collegiate Baseball magazine’s 10 finalists for its player-of-the year award.
Clayton and Sharts are the only finalists who pitch and play in the field.
Clayton, a junior right-hander, is 11-4 with two shutouts, 12 complete games, a 1.91 earned-run average and 129 strikeouts in 127 innings. He also has a team-leading .385 batting average to go with 14 doubles, five triples, nine home runs and 51 runs batted in.
Sharts, also a junior right-hander, is 9-5 with 10 complete games, a 3.61 earned-run average and 120 strikeouts in 127 innings. He has a nation-leading 22 home runs and a team-high 63 RBIs to go with a .303 batting average.
The other finalists are Arizona State outfielder Mike Kelly, Georgia Tech third baseman Andy Bruce, USC outfielder Mark Smith, Stanford first baseman David McCarty, Fresno State pitcher Bobby Jones, Tulane pitcher Ivan Zweig, Villanova outfielder Gene Schall and Wichita State shortstop Chris Wimmer.
