West Hollywood : Housing for AIDS Patients

The Community Housing Corp. has been awarded $2 million in state loans to build the first affordable housing project in California designed specifically to meet the needs of AIDS patients.
The 22-unit apartment complex will be located on Harper Avenue north of Santa Monica Boulevard. It will provide a number of special features for its residents, including bedrooms with extra space for medical equipment and an emergency call system. A 1,000-square-foot common area will be available for group meetings.
Most of the units will rent for about $260, according to city officials.
Technically, the apartments will be reserved for residents with “chronic life-threatening diseases” who earn less than $700 a month. Senior citizens and AIDS patients are the two groups in the city who fit the profile most often, housing officials note. Twenty of the 22 units will be reserved for AIDS patients.
The housing corporation, acting as the city’s developer on the project, intends to break ground in June. Plans call for completion of the project by June, 1992. The total budget for the project is $3.2 million. The city is contributing the remainder of the money not covered by the state loans.
