John J. McVeigh; Retired Police Officer

John J. McVeigh, a 30-year veteran of the Glendale Police Department, has died at a Glendale hospital. He was 63.

A Glendale resident, McVeigh died Saturday of complications from recent surgery, said his wife, Jo Ann McVeigh.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, McVeigh emigrated to the United States in 1948 and served in the U. S. Army during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was hired by the Glendale Police Department in January, 1956, and was a longtime partner of David Thompson, who is Glendale’s police chief. McVeigh later worked in the property and budget section of the department’s administrative services division. He retired in December, 1985.

McVeigh was a member of the Jewel City Masonic Lodge No. 368 in Glendale; Omar Shrine No. 9 in Glendale, the White Shrine of Jerusalem; the Scottish Rite in Pasadena, and was active with the International Order of Job’s Daughters.

In addition to his wife of 12 years, McVeigh is survived by his daughter, Merri Jo McVeigh of Glendale.

A funeral, with burial to follow, is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. today at the Old North Church at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Hollywood Hills. Forest Lawn Mortuary, Hollywood Hills, is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in McVeigh’s name to the H.I.K.E. (Hearing Impaired Kids Endowment) Fund, in care of Charles Terrill, 10115 Cherryhill Place, Spring Hill, Fla. 34608.
