The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit threw out a $50-million punitive damage award against Korean Air Lines for the deaths of 269 people aboard a KAL jumbo jet shot down by a Soviet fighter pilot in 1983. The appeals court upheld the jury’s finding that the airline was guilty of willful misconduct in failing to correct Flight 007’s course as it flew into Soviet airspace.
