World IN BRIEF : SOVIET UNION : Gorbachev to Give Nobel Speech in June

Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev, who has not picked up his 1990 Nobel Peace Prize due to economic and social turmoil at home, plans to give the traditional peace lecture in Oslo, Norway, on June 5 or 6, the Nobel Institute said. Peace Prize winners traditionally give their speeches withing six months of the Dec. 10 ceremony. Despite wide international acclaim when the prize was announced, Gorbachev came under fierce criticism only a few weeks later when Soviet forces cracked down on the independence-minded Baltic republics.
