Democracy will dawn at the top of the world in the remote Himalayan kingdom of Nepal on Sunday in national elections that complete a grass-roots, People Power revolution that began more than a year ago.
The vote is billed as Nepal’s first free and fair election, and thousands of candidates representing parties ranging from Communists to right-wing monarchists are vying for seats in the country’s national legislature.
With many Nepalese voting in villages accessible only by foot or by yak, results probably will not be known for several days. But analysts say that whatever the outcome, the nation’s venerable King Birendra, believed by many to be a reincarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, is likely to remain a key figure in Nepalese politics for years to come.
