Two-time Olympic champion Daley Thompson of Great Britain trailed countryman Brian Taylor by 46 points after the first day of the Irvine Decathlon Invitational at UC Irvine.
Taylor scored 3,934 points to 3,888 for Thompson after the first five of 10 events.
