*** VINCENT HERRING “Evidence,” Landmark Records. At 26, alto saxophonist Herring is a legitimate member of jazz’s Young Traditionalists, but he clearly has the chops, the sound and the imagination to be a first-rate jazz musician, regardless of era or method. Here, a thoughtful selection of material--ranging from Thelonious Monk’s “Evidence” to Kenny Barron’s rhythmically surging “Voyage”--generates a series of hard-swinging solos from Herring. Pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Ira Coleman and drummer Carl Allen lay down steady rhythm accompaniment.
