COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Errors Sting CLU in Softball Playoffs

Cal Lutheran, seeded first in the NAIA District 3 softball tournament, committed nine errors in an upset at the hands of visiting Azusa Pacific in a first-round game Friday.
Second-seeded Azusa Pacific took advantage of five errors to score eight runs in the fourth inning and win, 11-1, in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.
Cal Lutheran (31-9) and Azusa Pacific (31-19) will play the first game of a possible doubleheader today at 11 a.m. Cal Lutheran must sweep Azusa to advance to the bi-district tournament next week.
In Cal Lutheran’s first game, the Regals rallied with three runs in the seventh to beat Southern Cal College, 4-2.
Kristen Smith walked to score Cheryl Aschenbach with the winning run, and Marjie Sievers (13-4) picked up the victory.
BASEBALL
Cal Lutheran 6, Redlands 1--Host Cal Lutheran had only six hits but benefited from 15 walks in the nonconference game.
Cal Lutheran’s Tim Wimbish (6-0) threw a five-hitter. Dave Leonhardt hit his 10th home run, and Blake Babki had a pair of hits for Cal Lutheran (30-8).
Redlands is 20-18.
