COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Beat UC Santa Barbara, Move Into Second in Big West

Trevor Rush went three for four with two runs batted in as Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Santa Barbara, 8-4, in a Big West game Friday at Santa Barbara.

The Titans (29-21, 11-5 in league) moved into second place, a game ahead of Cal State Long Beach. Long Beach lost to conference-leading Fresno State, 2-1, Friday.

Junior right-hander Dan Naulty (6-3) gave up 11 hits in 7 1/3 innings. Senior right-hander Chris Robinson pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his ninth save. Jason Moler had a home run, his fourth, for Fullerton. Santa Barbara is 27-22-1, 6-10.

In another Big West Conference game:

UC Irvine 2, San Jose State 1--Chris Huber pitched a four-hitter and struck out nine for visiting UC Irvine (22-29, 4-12). The run Huber allowed was unearned. Joe Furukawa broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out single in the eighth for Irvine. Mark Ringkamp (7-4) took the loss for San Jose State (21-27, 5-11).

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Cal Poly Pomona 5, Chapman 2--Chris Hunt had two hits and Ed Morgan had two hits and three RBIs for visiting Cal Poly Pomona (24-24, 15-10) at Hart Park in Orange. Mike Kelley had two of Chapman’s four hits as the Panthers fell to 13-33, 8-17.

In the Sonoma State softball tournament:

Chapman 2, Cal State Hayward 0--Jackie Blake (23-4) pitched a three-hitter, striking out six and walking one for Chapman. In the fifth inning, Laura Papadakis hit a two-run triple to right field for Chapman (41-10).

In the NCAA Division II women’s tennis championships:

Ewing sisters advance--Sisters Donna and Diane Ewing, graduates of Valencia High, won in straight sets to help No. 1-ranked Cal Poly Pomona advance to the semifinal round with a 9-0 sweep of Air Force at the Gold River Racquet Club in Rancho Cordova. Donna Ewing (17-7) defeated D’Ron Longino, 6-0, 6-2, and Diane (22-10) defeated Laurel Scherer, 6-1, 6-1. Cal Poly plays Abilene Christian in today’s semifinals.
