CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Best, Director of Caltrans, Will Quit

Robert K. Best, director of the State Department of Transportation, will step down from his $99,805-a-year job. Best, 51, who has held his post since 1988, will be temporarily replaced by A. A. (Del) Pierce, undersecretary of the state Business, Transportation and Housing Agency. A nationwide search will be conducted to find a successor. During his tenure, Best helped to develop the voter-approved Propositions 111 and 108 that will provide $18 billion in transportation improvements over the next 20 years. He plans to establish a law firm in the Sacramento area and teach at McGeorge School of Law.
