Salvation Army Band to Perform

The 50-member Salvation Army Band will present a concert Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Spurgeon United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Gwen Ehrenborg will portray Catherine Booth, co-founder of the Salvation Army, in a dramatic presentation.

Ehrenborg is an ordained Methodist minister and has served as a missionary in Africa and Mexico.

The Salvation Army has been in existence for 112 years and now numbers 3 million members in 91 countries of the world.

Tustin Presbyterian Church will welcome English composer Andrew Carter on Sunday and May 12 as he participates in worship services.

His choral composition in honor of Robert T. Volbrecht, who has served the church as minister of music for 15 years, will be performed by the Chancel Choir. Its members will sing “Christ Is the Morning Star” at the 9 and 10:30 a.m. services.

Carter is a former Winston Churchill Fellow and was a student of Sweden’s master conductor Eric Ericson.

“A Biblical Response to Crime in Our Community” is the luncheon topic today at a Peacemaking Conference at Presbyterian Church of the Master in Mission Viejo.

The conference begins with continental breakfast at 8 a.m. followed by seminar sessions on conflict management and family issues. Registration fee is $10, which includes breakfast and lunch. Child care will be provided at no charge. Bring a prepared lunch for children.

A “Sacred Space Retreat” is planned for May 20 to 26 at the Center for Spiritual Development in Orange.

Participants are offered either unstructured time in a serene spiritual environment, or they may “create their own” prayer experience utilizing a variety of options that include daily liturgy and communal prayer, a prayer companion for discernment and support, and videos and books.

Victor O’Donovan and Ann McGlone will provide leadership.

Participants may reside at the center or commute. Cost for the retreat: private room $200; commuter $150 (includes lunch and dinner). Those interested must register by Friday. A handbell concert will be presented by the Cathedral and Sonlight Ringers of the Crystal Cathedral at 5:30 p.m. Sunday before the service. Pastor Juan Carlos Ortiz will lead the service. A freewill offering will be taken and child care is available.

The directors of the Hebrew Academy of Westminster, the Jewish Studies Institute and Morasha School will participate in a panel discussion, “Choices We Make for Our Children,” on Sunday.

In a series of sermons, the Rev. Jerry Tankersley of Laguna Presbyterian Church is discussing “What Are the Turning Points in Religious History as Sparked by Paul’s Letters to the Galatians?”
